Hey, remember when we used to watch actual TV channels that pumped out stuff we simply had to watch? How old-school was that?
Ok, just kidding! We still love TV channels. But these days, they’re not the only things to watch on television. Thanks to smart TVs, a whole new digital landscape is available to us. Netflix, iPlayer and 4OD are just a click away – and so is Youtube.
Sure, there are tons of awesome videos on the video site (and tons of… not-so-awesome videos). But did you know there are some Youtubers out there who have dedicated channels that they update on a regular basis? These pros have made a living out of becoming Youtube celebrities. Here are our top picks out there…
Cinemassacre
One of the first bright stars on Youtube was Cinemassacre’s Angry Video Game Nerd. Got a penchant for old-school games and scatological humour? Then you’ll love James Rolfe’s channel. He’s a personable, old-time movie buff who, in the guise of the AVGN, digs on playing Nintendo and Sega games – and looking at just how awful some of them are – with comic results! That’s not all he does, though. Alongside board games reviews in ‘Board James’, he also has a regular ‘James and Mike Mondays’, in which he and his pal and collaborator, Mike, play games and offer commentaries. It’s like hanging out with your best friends. Oh, and James’ Internet celeb status afforded him enough dollar to fund his own AVGN movie.
Outside Xbox
Prefer your games channels to be a little more grounded? Check out Outside Xbox. It started life on the Xbox360 as Inside Xbox, until Microsoft pulled the plug. Thankfully, half the team was brought into EuroGamer’s loving embrace. The OxBox crew of Andy, Mike and Jane bring us reviews and the latest clips. But more than that, they record ‘Let’s Play’ vids (Hey, they’re just as good/bad as we are!), show us funny listicles like ‘5 Video Game Characters Who Will Definitely Die’. And every Friday, there’s a ‘Show of the Week’, which rounds up the latest gaming news, mocks Youtube comments on their videos, and throws a spotlight on the hottest game that week. Although they’re presenters, each of these guys have a definite ‘character’, with Andy playing straight-man to Jane’s Hermione-esque science brain and Mike’s childishly ridiculous schemes – and that makes it work.
The League of Super Critics
Not just one star here. Nor two. Nor three. But a colossal four ‘super critics’. Each of the stars has a set day for release. On Mondays, it’s the Nostalgia Chick; Tuesdays bring us the bassy tones of the Cinema Snob; and Thursdays is set aside for Todd in the Shadows, who offers simply scathing reviews of pop songs.
Holding it all together, though, is Wednesday’s Nostalgia Critic – the original super critic. He’s essentially Daffy Duck in human form, reviewing the very worst movies known to man. What’s great about NC – as he’s affectionately known – is the surprising amount of work that goes into each 30-minute episode. The script’s tight, hilarious, and the effects easily on par, and often better, than half the stuff you’ll catch on regular TV.
Your Grammar Sucks
Don’t you just hate a typo? How about multiple typos…in the same comment? Or comments which literally make no sense, no matter how many times you read them? Well, so does Jack at JacksFilms. That’s why he started collating the very worst Youtube comments, and reading them out on camera. Ok, it might not help with actually cleaning up Youtube, but it’s a good start – with any luck anyone featured in his two- to three-minute videos will feel utter shame at their mauling of the beautiful English language. And the less said about rappers and rapping, the better!
