Your Guide To LED TVs

When you are buying your cheap LED TV online from us at Cheap LED TVs, we understand that it’s not always easy to understand what it is precisely that you are buying. With so many different TVs and technologies kicking around in the ionosphere, it can sometimes be difficult to comprehend what all of the initials stand for, let alone how they operate!

So, because we would like our customers to make an educated decision on their purchase, let’s take a look at the ins and outs of LED TVs.

What is LED?

An LED is a light-emitting diode, and these glow with exposure to electric current through their semiconductors; essentially, they’re a bulb. The LED screen is actually an LCD screen, or Liquid Crystal Display, where, instead of having a backlight consisting of a fluorescent lamp, like CCFL technologies, they use light-emitting diodes as a source of light behind the screen.

CCFL stands for cold-cathode fluorescent lamp and having one as a backlight is how normal LCD screens work. The backlight to an LCD screen consists of a series of light tubes, similar to fluorescent lights you’ll be familiar with but smaller, which are placed behind the screen.

Types of LEDs

There are three types of LEDs that are typically used in an LED TV. The first of which is the edge-lit LED, where the LEDs are placed around the edge of the screen and diffuse light across it using a bespoke diffusion panel to spread the light evenly across.

The second is LED backlighting, which, as you may have guessed, involves the placement of LEDs behind the actual screen, with the final type being dynamic backlighting. Unlike the backlighting technique, where the LEDs aren’t controlled individually, with dynamic backlighting the LEDs are controlled individually or in clusters to control colour and light intensity.

Benefits

LED TVs are more energy efficient than CCFL and LCD screens, consuming between 20 and 30% less energy than an LCD screen of the same size. Also, with the incorporation of LEDs as opposed to CCFLs, the screens can be much thinner and lighter. LEDs also require less energy to operate and can produce brighter and more vivid on screen colours; perfect for film and game addicts alike.

So if you’re the type of person who likes their colours bright, their screens thin and their wallets thankful, then you may want to consider an LED TV ahead of an LCD model.
