So you’re wondering, ‘What size TV for my room would look best?’, right? Well, lucky for you, there are geniuses out there who can – and we’ve got just such a bunch of back-room boffins right here at Cheap LED TV.
Choosing a TV that offers an optimal viewing experience is down to more than whether or not it has Full HD capabilities, or smart technology. Remember the days of the old 14” CRTs? How did we ever cope? Well, by sitting closer, probably.
The Rule of 3
Yep, how far away you sit plays a big part in choosing what size of TV you should buy. It may seem obvious, but if your couch is at the back of a 400ft room, a 32” isn’t going to cut it (And conversely, you don’t want your knees squashed up against the screen of a 60” Samsung).
That’s why we have the ‘Rule of 3’.
In essence, if the TV you want is a 42”, don’t sit more than 126” from the screen (i.e. more than three times the size).
It’s not a hard and fast rule – some people argue less, others reckon more is fine, but we believe it’s a great general rule when choosing the right size TV for your room. Based on this, where you have a few screen size options available to you, a good thing to remember is that while bigger equals more immersion, smaller equals cheaper. So consider what you’re looking to get out of your TV.
The Position Indicator
Once you’ve bought a new TV, where will you put it? Position is another factor to consider when choosing your TV size. You want the best views in the house, and that comes down to location.
A lot of people try to please all of the people all of the time – a folly, if history has shown us anything. For instance, we’ve all been to a friend’s house, where the TV is angled to that you can watch it from both the sofa and the dining table. That’s not a great idea, because it means that no-one’s getting the full screen experience.
Our advice? Pick a single position, targeted at a single area.
The Home Trial
Finally, just to be really sure you’ve opted for the right-sized screen for your room, why not just test it out before purchase? Ok, not with an actual TV, but an acceptable substitute.
If your TV is intended for the wall, hang a bed sheet that’s folded to the same shape as the TV; jury-rig a cardboard box and place it on a stand if that’s where the TV will end up. You might look absolutely bonkers if anyone comes ‘round to watch EastEnders on the big sheet – or the goggle(cardboard)box – but appearances aside, this is an effective method.
The home trial allows you to picture the TV in situ. Does the size look right for the distance you’ll be at? Do you have to crane your neck or do your eyes dodge about to get an overview of the ‘screen’? Does it fit with the overall design of the room? You can learn all that before you’ve even paid for your new television.
