This year has seen a new wave of headsets hit the market, with many more products on the way. They connect to your PC, smartphone or games console, and provide either an immersive virtual reality (VR) environment or a mixed-reality augmented reality (AR) world that combines what you see through a phone screen or headset with digital imagery and information.
Get Your VR Game on
PlayStation VR will be officially unveiled at a Sony event on 7th September, with pricing and availability details to be announced then. Imagine being in Call of Duty or Gran Turismo, with every turn of your head being matched by the game world moving around you. That sounds pretty impressive, but some people have reported feeling sick at first due to the strange sensation and slight lag some games suffer from, so be careful if you try this in a store or a show.
Users can already watch Netflix on their HD helmets, and will soon be able to watch 3D movies on their VR headsets, bringing them even closer to the 3D effect, with visual elements flying right past their eyes. Expect other developments as designers come up with new ideas for the technology, which will rapidly mature, increase in power and come down in cost. It shouldn’t be long before 4K headsets making virtual reality indiscernible from real life are invented.
