TV Series Remakes: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

There’s nothing quite like the feeling when your favourite TV series comes to an end. However in the world of television goodbyes are not always forever and several reboots of popular TV series have hit our screens of late. Here we give our rundown of some of the best and the worst TV remakes to have graced our screens in recent years.

American Skins

Skins was a TV series that in many respects defined a generation. The hugely popular teen drama series ran for a total of 7 seasons, finally coming to an end in 2013, much to the disappointment of its many fans. In 2011 American TV network MTV launched an American version of the series. However it was no patch on the original, with much of what made the original series great, such as its gritty realism, having been lost in translation. As summed up perfectly by the Guardian, “MTV’s US remake lobotomised Skins”.

The Office: An American Workplace

An altogether more successful American remake of a British cult classic was the American remake of The Office. The original series of The Office starring Ricky Gervais was hugely successful, and it was with some trepidation that fans greeted the news that there was to be an American remake of the series. However the American version of The Office proved to be a resounding success, and perhaps the key to this was the fact that despite sharing a number of similarities with the original series, it proved to be more of a reinterpretation of the original series rather than an imitation, and there was enough originality to make the series compelling in its own right.

Dr Who

The first episode of Dr Who was broadcast back in 1963, and since then The Doctor has undergone a number of reincarnations, having now been played by a total of 12 different actors. The original series ran from 1963 to 1989 and carved out for itself a special place in British culture. The series was finally re-launched in 2005 under the helm of Russell T Davies, following much anticipation, and has proved more popular than ever, demonstrating the timeless quality of the series, which deserves its places as an icon of British television.
