Poltergeist (1982)
Sure, it doesn’t have all the terrifying special effects of some more recent movies, but there’s something oddly unsettling about an older horror film. The Freeling family have the perfect life in their idyllic town, until strange goings on begin to happen in the house. If the film itself isn’t enough to scare you, there are claims of a real life curse over the cast resulting in the death of several members. Apparently, they used real life human remains in the movie, so it’s no surprise the spirits are a little miffed.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
If you want to find a movie that will ensure you’ll never sleep again, this is the one for you! Freddie Krueger has got to be one of the most terrifying villains in the history of cinema; pair that with the premise that he can kill teenagers through their dreams and you have the recipe for no sleep ever.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The 2003 remake was scary, but again, it’s the originals that are the creepiest. It follows the regular horror movie pattern of a group of teenagers being picked off one by one by a terrifying psychopath. This time, the chainsaw-wielding maniac wears the skin of his victims, making for one horrifying villain. The marketing team branded this as a true story, making it all the more disturbing.
