Plenty of TV shows have made the transition to the big-screen – and generally they’re pretty bad. After all, it’s hard to expand a 25 minute storyline into a 90 minute hit. Just look at the largely forgettable Simpsons Movie (Besides Spider-Pig, can you name one thing that even happened in that film?). It’s less common to see movies turned into TV shows, and even less so to see a great adaptation. But it’s not impossible to draw on inspiration from a movie to create a great show. With the Fargo TV series coming to DVD, we’re taking a look at the best TV shows based on movies, starting with…
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles
Remember the Young Indy flashback scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? That’s what inspired this series starring Sean Patrick Flannery in the title role. Sure, he’s no Harrison Ford, but he’s got that fedora and that smile – what more do you want? The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was an epic blast across history with some great cameos from real-life characters including Lawrence of Arabia and Sigmund Freud.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy is basically a master-class in how to turn a sub-par comedy-horror into a highly-rated, much-loved TV show. A lot of the charm comes from the cast and the way creator Joss Whedon captured teen dialogue. And the concept of using horror movie clichés to highlight the pains of adolescence was perfectly realised. It may have got super-silly near the end of its 7-season run, but for the most part, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was superior to its big-screen sister.
Fargo
If you haven’t been watching Fargo, as we’ve said, the DVD will be released on September 22nd. So you’ll be able to catch up on this excellently produced TV show based on the Coen brothers’ 1996 thriller. It’s not a strict spin-off – unlike the original Fargo TV series – but it’s heavily inspired by the film, with some sly references for fans of the original. The show features a psychopathic Billy Bob Thornton, who used to be famous once upon a time, but the stand-out star has to be that affable chap Martin Freeman playing deliciously amoral insurance salesman Lester Nygaard.
