TV shows these days are bigger and better than they’ve ever been. Whether this is due to more money being available, or that these days people are ‘binge-watching’ more than ever, it’s a very exciting time to be a TV show fanatic.
Over the past 5 years, there have been a whole host of shows released that have instantly captured the attention of both the audience and the media.
These are the programmes that are watched vigorously every week, and the shows that are binge-watched religiously once they’re off the air.
In this two-part series, we’ve put together a list of our favourite TV shows of the last 5 years…so far!
The Walking Dead (2010 – Present)
Probably one of the most popular shows of the last 5 years, The Walking Dead is based on a comic book series of the same name.
In the first series we’re introduced to a small group people attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse. Sherriff’s deputy Rick Grimes awakens from a month-long coma in a deserted and destroyed hospital to discover that zombies overrun the population. Along the way we’re introduced to more survivors, who are all trying to find a safe place away from the undead – known as ‘walkers.’
In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last few years, it isn’t as terrible as it might sound. It’s actually a well-written, brilliantly acted TV show that’s well worth getting caught up in the hype. Just don’t get too attached to anyone!
House Of Cards (2013 – Present)
House of Cards is a Netflix series, which is good news for those who love to binge-watch! Netflix release a whole season on one go, which is perfect for those who want to sit down and watch it all at once.
The story follows main character Frank Underwood (played by the fantastic Kevin Spacey), who is on a mission to become the President of the United States. He’s ruthless, cunning, charismatic and manipulative, and he doesn’t care about who he takes down along the way.
Something that makes House of Cards extra special is the way that Frank talks directly to the camera. This breaking of the ‘fourth wall’ makes it seem like Frank is acknowledging you personally.
It may not sound your type of show, but we recommend you give this political drama a chance, as it really is worth a watch.
Orphan Black (2013 – Present)
Orphan Black is a fascinating TV show that explores the intriguing world of human clones. (No, it isn’t as lame as that sounds!).
It follows orphan Sarah Manning, who, after witnessing a woman who looks exactly like her commit suicide, steals her double’s identity. At first she just wants to clean out the woman’s savings to wipe all her debts, but is instead thrown into something much more sinister when she works out that she and the woman were clones. Sarah soon discovers that they aren’t the only ones, and she must rush to meet with these other women as they’re all in danger.
It’s worth a watch just to see the amazing Tatiana Maslany play all the different characters. She makes every single character completely different, so you actually feel like you’re watching different actors. Give it a chance, we know you’ll love it.
