Spectre’s just around the corner now – get over the hump that is summer, crash headlong into autumn, hit November and voila, it’ll be here. Recently, you may have seen some exclusive snaps of the world’s finest secret agent at play on the Thames in The Spectator.
But before we get too excited about what’s to come, let’s look at what’s been. There have been some flat-out awesome moments in the past 23 Bond films. So we thought we’d check out some of his best bits. And where better to start than at the beginning
The Introduction – Dr. No (1962)
007’s introduction is as famous as his very particular way of ordering a drink. And what an intro this is, with the camera hiding his face until the last possible second, cigarette lit, as he responds to the beautiful Sylvia Trench with those immortal lines: ‘Bond. James Bond.’ Just don’t try it yourself. Saying, ‘Harris. Bob Harris,’ won’t sound half as cool as you think it does.
That Parachute – The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Pre-credit sequences are a staple of the Bond franchise. It gears the audience up for the rest of the movie and highlights how awesome Bond really is. And probably the most iconic pre-credits sequence in the entire series has to be when he skied straight off an alpine cliff before unleashing a Union Jack parachute – what a gent!
Covering Up – The Living Daylights (1987)
Look, Bond has gadgets. That’s kind of his thing. But that doesn’t mean everyone knows it, right? That goes double for Kara Milovy – an innocent cellist who’s tangled up in a case of double-crosses and espionage thanks to her dastardly fella. Caught up in a high-speed chase with the rozzers, Timothy Dalton’s Bond uses his tricked out Aston Martin to gain the advantage. But his explanations to hide the fact are genius.
Hidden Emotions – Casino Royale (2006)
When Daniel Craig took over the role of Agent 007, there was a big push to ensure we all knew this was a different Bond. Connery has his silky smooth viciousness; Moore had his wry one-liners; Dalton was the king of brooding; and Brosnan was an all-out action hero. But Craig, Craig had something else. He had…genuine emotion. He’s a real person, not a caricature. And nowhere is this more evident than when he comforts Vesper in the shower, having just brutally murdered two crims. As you do.
That Gun Barrel Opening
What a way to kick off any movie. See those white circles chasing each other across a stark, black background and you know you’re in for a treat. Need we say more?
