Unless all 6 billion of us take a united stand against the dominance of the Gregorian calendar, the year 2014 has very nearly ended right before our eyes. As such, we’ve already started to compile a list of our favourite TV shows of the year – but what about video games?
When it comes to gaming, 2014 hasn’t exactly covered itself in glory. For every awesome Alien: Isolation there’s another dull Assassin’s Creed ready to steal an undeserved top spot in the charts. Ask gamers whether 2014 has been a banner year for gaming as the answer will be a very sarcastic ‘definitely.’ Many commentators think this may well have been the worst year of gaming since Atari crashed and burned in ’83. But what are, very actually, the worst games of the year? Glad you asked, let’s start with…
Assassin’s Creed Unity
Remember what made the Assassin’s Creed series excellent? Nope, neither does anyone at Ubisoft if this tragedy is anything to go by. By trying to turn the games into an annual event a la Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed has ended up becoming tired, unimaginative and, frankly, broken. The glitches are some of the worst ever seen in gaming, breaking what was already a mediocre game beyond all playability, and inducing the righteous wrath of fans.
Escape Dead Island
Hey, Dead Island, that was a fun game, right? A little clunky but what’s not to love about bashing zombie skulls with a spiked baseball bat. So how about taking all that fans loved about the original game, then, y’know, not implementing it into the spin-off. That’s precisely what happened with Escape Dead Island. If you want a poorly-written story, badly told through mostly inanimate animation, with awful controls that will get you killed, this is the game for you!
Sonic Boom
Ah, Sonic. Speedy little blue hedgehog, bit of an attitude, and more bad games under his belt than bullets spent in GTA. He was already, shamefully, part of the seriously shoddy Sonic 2006. And this year he managed to trump that by starring in two awful-awful-awful games – Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal for the Wii U and 3DS respectively. It was an uninspired maelstrom of bad character redesigns, terrible camera controls, sub-par writing, and glitch-ridden gameplay. It’s all part of some sort of rebooted, updated version of Sonic the Hedgehog, where instead of being a really cool video games icon, he becomes the front-man of two of the worst games of the year.
