With so many astounding, award-winning films on offer, the battle for the top spot has been tough. Here are the five most successful films of the year so far.
1. Beauty and the Beast
It’s a tale as old as time and one that’s been a firm favourite for years. This Disney Classic was already much loved, but its new live-action remake has exceeded all expectations. Keeping true to the magnificent music, charming characters and stunning scenery, this film was praised by adults and children alike. Starring ‘Harry Potter’ actress Emma Watson, Beauty and the Beast broke box office records when it grossed £18.4 million over the first weekend of its release.
2. Dunkirk
Written, directed, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk is a war film for the ages. Depicting the horrors of World War 2 by focusing on the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940, this was an emotional story of love and loss. For many, there was a strong personal connection to this story and for those whose family lived and fought during the war, it made for quite difficult viewing. That said, Dunkirk is a visual masterpiece with a heart-racing plot. The importance of this devastating story, based on true events, should be experienced by all.
3. Despicable Me 3
The return of the ‘Minions’ was long anticipated and Despicable Me 3 did not disappoint. Taking over £30,319,469 in three weeks, this film saw families attend in their masses. Featuring cheeky humour, lovable villains and awe-inspiring animation, it’s no wonder that this film was so well received.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Marvel have been out in full force this year with Spiderman: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok taking to the screen. But it was the second instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy that really boomed at the box office. Star-Lord returns with his unlikely team of heroes, including the newly reformed Baby Groot. Guardians of the Galaxy incorporates superhero action, epic fantasy, huge soundtracks and witty humour to create a story that is completely enjoyable and gripping from the start. With a star-studded cast, this really was a movie not to be missed.
5. It
Highly anticipated, fans of Stephen King waited with bated breath for the new version of his classic; It. Featuring the famous Pennywise, this clown had audiences screaming, and not with laughter! Well on its way to becoming the most popular horror movie of all time, It grossed £22.2 million within just ten days of cinema play.
