Spotlight On: QLED

QLED means Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode. This variation of quantum dot technology was introduced at CES this year, and it’s already exciting experts about the future of TV.

Samsung unveiled their QLED 4K TVs at CES, showcasing how they took quantum dots and wrapped them in a new form of metal alloy. This allowed for better colours and brightness, including new viewing angles that we haven’t seen before. Although not yet available on the market, it’s expected that we’ll see QLED TVs being introduced in the next two years.

How Does It Work?

Tiny particles with between two and 10 nanometres of diameter compose quantum dots which, depending on size, emit different colours. It’s an extra layer that improves the vibrancy and quality of colours, providing an increase in screen brightness. The technology works through placing this layer in front of an LCD backlight panel, containing nanocrystals with the ability of individually emitting their own colour.

This capability of improving colour quality is ideal for HDR television, as colours are produced more accurately.

QLED Vs OLED

OLED technology provides a viewing experience with sharper colours and deeper blacks through using less energy than other TVs, by turning pixels on and off. The way QLED works is similar; the technology exchanges photoluminescent quantum dots present in modern quantum dot TVs for nanoparticles. Light is supplied directly into the TV display, creating an entirely new technology.

As QLED is considered to be more cost efficient to produce than other existing television technologies, it brings great promise of replacing current TVs and produce better image quality worldwide. This new technology revitalises the decades-old liquid crystal display technology that modern TVs have. It can match OLED’s contrast ratio but provide an increase in power efficiency.

QLED TVs can have between 1,500 and 2,000 nits of peak brightness, which represents a big step from last year’s 1,000. The technology can handle DCI-P3 with accuracy and reproduce colour volume to 100%. Room lighting won’t affect the quality of the display image, as QLED TVs are meant to deliver a constant, stunning image quality.
