In 4 days’ time, we will know who has won some of the world’s most renowned accolades at this year’s Academy Awards on February 26th 2017. The Oscars is a special occasion in the film calendar, as it is a time to celebrate everyone’s great achievements throughout 2016.
The nominees have been announced, but we wanted to make a couple of our own predictions as to who will win at the 89th Academy Awards.
Best Picture – La La Land
La La Land has been in the news recently for being one of the most highly-rated films in the Academy Awards nominations, especially since it was gathered a whopping 14 nominations, equalling 1950’s All About Eve and 1997’s Titanic.
La La Land focuses on the story of an aspiring actress, Mia, and a jazz musician, Sebastian, that are struggling to make ends meet when they are striving to achieve their dreams within their respective industries. However, the musical takes a romantic turn and explores the importance of love, but is the spotlight more important?
The film has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for multiple awards, such as the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and much more. However, we believe that the pride and glory of the accolades this film will win will be the Best Picture.
Best Director – Denis Villeneuve
Villeneuve has been in the directing business for over two decades, with his first feature film being 1996’s Cosmos. However, in recent years, he has been known for directing the winner of the Best Cinematography Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, Prisoners, and 2015’s Sicario that received three Academy Award nominations.
However, in 2016, Villeneuve directed the science fiction film Arrival that is adapted from the 1998 novella “Story of Your Life”. Arrival focuses on mysterious spacecrafts landing on Earth, where a team lead by a linguist is sent to investigate, but this then results in a series of events that could threaten humanity.
Arrival has been nominated for an amazing 8 awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound Editing, and more. However, with this film being one of Villeneuve’s masterpieces, we feel that we will succeed in being rewarded the Academy Award for Best Director.
Best Actor – Andrew Garfield
Garfield has been in the film circuit for a decade now, with his feature film debut being the 2007 film Lions for Lambs. He is known for his portrayal of Eduardo Severin in 2010’s The Social Network, as well as playing Peter Parker in the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man, from which he received praise.
In 2016, he portrayed Desmond T. Doss, a US Army corporal who served as a combat medic in World War 2 who was also a conscientious objector due to his personal beliefs. In the Battle of Okinawa, he saved the lives of 75 wounded soldiers, resulting in him receiving the Medal of Honour.
2016’s Hacksaw Ridge depicts this story, with Garfield playing the corporal. Garfield’s performance was truly amazing and, as such, fully deserves to win the Best Actor Academy Award.
