OLED vs QLED: Which is Better?

unpacking a cheap led tv in the living room

OLED; a cutting-edge technology that provides image quality that is better than ever before.

QLED; a cutting-edge technology designed to provide greater depth and contrast quality.

With such similar names and claims, we understand exactly why you find trying to differentiate between these two so difficult, but this article is here to look at each in detail so that you can decide whether you want the OLED TV or the QLED TV  (or any other of our amazing cheap LED TVs) in your living room next Christmas.

OLED TVS

OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode and is a type of display tech that involves a carbon-based film being placed between two conductors. These pass a current through the film and cause it to emit lights. These lights culminate in the images that you see on your television screen.

OLEDs are a huge improvement on previous LED technology as they provide brighter, crisper displays with deeper blacks and gorgeous contrasts, all whilst using less power than typical LED or LCD TVs that are still in use in many homes today. As well as providing superior image quality, an OLED TV is simply eco-friendlier which is a goal that everyone can get behind.

One benefit of choosing to purchase an OLED TV is that one of the latest trends in TV design is currently using OLED technology. The LG ROLED TV is 65” of superb quality including colour depth and wider viewing angles, but most importantly – it rolls away into a compact box when you aren’t using it.

The LG OLED Type R changes current expectations of what a TV is by questioning the amount of space that a TV should take up in the home, and the fact that LG chose OLED technology for their flagship of 2019 means that some big names in TV have a lot of confidence in the quality of OLED technology.

QLED TVS

Standing for Quantum-dot Light-Emitting Diode, this TV is most notable for each pixel being able to emit its own light – those quantum dots are semiconductors only a few nanometres in size and can offer picture quality that challenges OLED’s superiority.

While OLED’s main draw is the ability to produce deeper blacks and astounding levels of detail, QLED sells itself on being able to produce brighter colours with fantastic tones, as well as the deep blacks that OLEDs are providing. One difference between the two is that the QLED screens will generally lose a minuscule amount of picture detail in the process of creating stronger and brighter colours. In comparison, the OLED can look a little dark but a QLED might look a little oversaturated, so which screen you choose will all come down to personal preference.

While LG have put their cards on OLED technology, Samsung are voting for the future of QLED by investing their new Q90 series with this technology. While OLED is generally preferred by critics and reviewers based on its picture quality, the fact that the competition between the two is so slender speaks volumes for the quality of both technologies.

Like OLED, QLED is also being supported by many big companies so any buyer should feel comfortable and confident when purchasing their latest cheap QLED TVs.

Which Technology is Best Prepared for the Future?

With 8K technology just around the corner, you might want to know which technology will best support this upcoming superior streaming quality. Unfortunately, the answer to this question won’t position either OLED or QLED as superior as both are used in upcoming 8K screens.

On one hand, QLED technology is somewhat cheaper, increasingly so when compared against OLEDs in larger models. This means that where you have saved money on the screen, you can purchase accessories to make your TV a fuller entertainment experience. We’re thinking about adding surround sound, buying a harmony remote and connecting an Alexa for voice control – any of these things are possible.
