Bah humbug. It’s almost December, and you know what that means? A whole month before we’re finally free of all those tinselly decorations, piped-in music – or ‘torture’ – you’ve been forced to listen to every year since birth, and people wandering into each other with soppy grins all over their face and wishing you a ‘Merry Christmas’. Ridiculous! After all, to quote the classic, you don’t make merry yourself at Christmas, and you can’t afford to make idle people merry.
And you know what the absolute worst is? Those schmaltzy cheese-fests that are Christmas movies, warming the cockles of nobody’s heart. Love, family, friendship, good will to all men? Humbug! But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of the best not-very-Christmassy Christmas films.
Die Hard
Terrorism. Robbery. Dodgy German accents. Nothing says Christmas like a white-vested, barefoot Bruce Willis shooting up Alan Rickman and his motley crew of villainous bad guys in a skyscraper. Yippee-kay-ay, Christmas-Lover!
Brazil
Sure, you could perch around a log fire, drinking eggnog, pulling crackers and laughing at jokes you’ve heard a million times before. Or you could watch Brazil – Terry Gilliam’s Orwellian retro-futuristic comment on our capacity for greed, even at Christmas.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
If you’ve never seen indie comedy noir Kiss Kiss Bang Bang treat yourself this yuletide. Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer – remember him? – spend Christmas in Hollywood, hunting down gangsters, incestuous fathers, and a twisty little murder plot. Fun for all the family!
Gremlins
When you get down to it, Gremlins aren’t so different from excitable children. Wildly out of control and wholly disrespectful. So why not take the wind out of their happy sails and force them to watch the saddest Christmas story ever filmed…
Batman Returns
You’re not like other people, are you? When others think of ‘Christmas’, they see Santa Claus. When you think ‘Christmas’, you think of Batman. He’s dark, brooding, tortured. Y’know, all the things that Christmas represents. Winter in Gotham is just about as cheerful as you’d imagine, which should suit us Scrooges down to the ground.
