A lot of the time the first reaction to a movie remake is a bored groan – it’s all too common to see films that were already awesome the first time round get a remake that adds absolutely nothing. At the same time, there are plenty of films that could definitely benefit from a remake… perhaps the idea was great, but the delivery was awful, or maybe modern technology could give a fresh look to an old flick. Today, we’re going to look at three horror movie remakes that we’d really like to see: make it happen, Hollywood!
Children of the Corn
Movies based on Stephen King’s enormous catalogue of chilling novels tend to go one of two ways: films like The Shining, Stand by Me and Misery have all become classics, however many King adaptations fall flat – especially according to the man himself! One adaptation which just doesn’t do the source material justice is Children of the Corn, with a lengthy string of sequels, none of which hit the spot.
Although there has been a straight-to-TV version, we think that the true terror of King’s original short story deserves a proper movie: we visualise it with a tantalisingly slow increase of tension, gradually building up to the horrifying realisation that – well, we’re not going to spoil it for you here.
Van Helsing
The 2004 Van Helsing movie can hardly be called a horror movie, but it certainly should have been! The character, based on a vampire hunter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, deserved a film that would give us real shivers down our spines; a cat and mouse chase between the master monster killer and his deadly, devilish prey.
The Birds
Wait, hear us out! We know that the original was incredible, and we’re not suggesting anything else, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that a remake of The Birds wouldn’t be welcome on our cinema screens. Still not convinced? We have two reasons – the first is the modern technology that could be used to cause true terror as the birds attack, and we’re not even talking about CGI: filmmakers could take advantage of modern practical effects to create all kinds of apocalyptic crow chaos.
The second thing that would make us interested by a remake is the fact that the ending of The Birds as Hitchcock made it didn’t follow the original script, and they left several alternate endings in the waste paper bin; it also deviated greatly from the Daphne du Maurier story that it was based on.
Controversial? Perhaps, but we’d love to see a The Birds remake that doesn’t try to touch the original, instead doing something different and exciting. And if all this has put you in the mood to watch Hitchcock’s original, or any classic horror flicks, then you’ll need a great TV to get the full effect – why not treat yourself to an up-to-the-minute HD model!
