Can a comedy show that’s found still be considered lost? This morning, the BFI revealed that, after a cheeky trawl through the archives of the late broadcaster Sir David Frost, they’ve discovered near-complete copies of two episodes of the show many consider the forerunner to Monty Python’s Flying Circus. At Last the 1948 Show starred Pythons’ John Cleese and Graham Chapman, alongside former Goodie Tim Brooke-Taylor and ‘mad’ Marty Feldman.
Thought of as lost for years now, the debut episode and the final show of the final series have been found. It’s all thanks to the awesomely-named BFI ‘Missing Believed Wiped team’ – which is sort of like the audio-visual equivalent of The X-File Unit (probably). The surreal sketch show – which featured jokes about buying chartered accountants in shops – holds up pretty well, despite being shot in 1967. But what do you expect from two-fifths of the Python crew?
Of course, there’s still a ton of shows out there that are missing. This stems from the genius idea of broadcasters saving money by recording over the original tapes with new shows. Here’s a few more we’d love to see back on our screens.
Dad’s Army
Ok, we’ve all seen Dad’s Army. Watching it with older viewers usually elicits a ‘He’s dead now. And him. So’s he.’ But there are still three ancient episodes yet to be found after their initial 1969 broadcast. We’re doomed!
Hancock’s Half Hour
Tony Hancock was a true comedic legend. So it’s mind-boggling that, of the 57 TV episodes produced, almost half are missing. Maybe somewhere, in someone’s basement, 26 of these classics are stashed away. But unless that someone is Sir David Frost, they could well be gone forever.
Marty
What is it about Marty Feldman, John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Tim Brooke-Taylor that the powers-that-be wish to see them wiped from our screens? Marty was Feldman’s next series after 1948… Eye-popping Marty was the main man, with Cleese and co. chipping in with the scripts. Four of the twelve episodes are considered lost.
