What is an LED TV?
An LED TV is a type of LCD TV which uses light-emitting diodes (LED) to backlight the display. This differs from conventional LCDs because, unlike the regular CCFLs (cold cathode fluorescent lights), LEDs have lower power requirements, converting power to light more efficiently and meaning there is less light leakage – the cause of image fuzziness.
There are three different types of LED technology to choose from:
- Edge-lit or Edge Lighting LED – is the most common of the three. White LEDs are situated around the edge of the screen, with a diffusion panel used to display the image evenly across. These types of TV can be very thin, but they don’t display darker and black tones to the same depth as other types of TV and you usually find that the edges of the screen are lighter than the centre.
- Dynamic RGB LED – this type of TV has red, blue and green LEDs placed directly behind the screen, which combine to create more vivid colours. However, not all colours are possible and browns and pinks are still not displayed in their true shade.
- Full–Array LED – rows of LED are positioned directly behind the screen panel, similar to RGB LED displays. These display blackness with more resolution but can create a potential ‘halo’ effect in light images pitched against a dark background.
LED TVs can come in HD (high definition) if it has a high resolution. As LED TVs use light-emitting diodes, they differ slightly.
