Sport is often one of the primary instigators behind advancing TV technology. Many UK residents base their habits around the premier sporting events during each year, and we invest a great deal of time and emotional energy into our favourite sportsmen every time we see them compete.
Whilst we can’t all be sportsmen, we all want to be able to watch our sporting heroes in action, and this means that we turn to our TVs as soon as a leading sports extravaganza kicks off. The Commonwealth Games is naturally the focal point of the UK sporting calendar at the moment, and not only does it represent a first for Scotland – being the largest cultural and sporting event ever to be hosted there – but it is also ushering in some brand new TV trials as well.
Commonwealth TV Trials
According to the BBC News website, the Commonwealth Games is serving as the ‘guinea pig’ for a variety of TV innovations. Here is a brief run-down of the services that are being experimented with:
- High-frame-rate (HFR) and ultra-high-definition (UHD) streams: both of these innovations have been used in the past, but the Commonwealth Games is looking to take them even further forwards. Frame rates of 100 frames per second are far higher than the norm, and are said to decrease the amount of flicker on a TV screen. UHD formats have already been shown to the public over the course of the World Cup, but they return for the Commonwealth with resolutions that are four times what the average high-definition TV could cope with.
- Virtual Reality: this has possibly been one of the most talked about ‘buzzwords’ in TV for more time than many people care to remember, but the BBC are tentatively showcasing such a service at the Commonwealth Games. It allows information and data to be ‘over-layed’ onto the sports images that a person is watching, giving them a huge amount of interesting data as they watch. 360-degree videos and ‘3D audio’ are also been employed, so sports coverage is looking increasingly futuristic.
- Venue Explorer: good TV is all about immersion, and the new ‘venue explorer’ lets people zoom in and out of live feeds as they like, giving them an unprecedented amount of control from touch-screen devices like tablets or smart TVs. Data about what you’re watching will also be on hand, and, thanks to wide-angle cameras, no resolution will be lost, no matter how you choose to change the images on your screens.
Watching Sport on Your TV
Sadly, some of these innovations (like the HFR and UHD streams) are not yet available to public networks due to the lack of ‘technical infrastructure’, so one of the only ways to experience these enhanced TV effects is to attend a viewing showcase in an area like London or Glasgow. However, that doesn’t mean that your view of the Commonwealth Games, or indeed any other future sporting event in the future, needs to be compromised, as here at Cheap LED TV we have a wide range of affordable and high quality TVs that will certainly make you feel right at the heart of the action.
