HDR: What You Need To Know

In the television industry, we’ve recently been introduced to the latest wave of TVs that offer 4K resolution, which offers four times the quality of an ordinary HD TV. This alone is incredible but HDR will change the way we see picture performance, meaning we will view television programmes and films in a revolutionary way.

What Is HDR?

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and it actually originates from photography. It refers to a technique that essentially heightens a picture’s dynamic range, which describes the contrast between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks.

The idea behind HDR is that the higher the dynamic range, the closer the picture gets to real life. HDR TV operates under the exact same concept. The reason why TV manufacturers want to bring in this revolutionary technique is because it can give a greater perception and added depth of objects.

What’s So Good About HDR TV?

Applying HDR to TVs will basically mean that the TV’s contrast ratio and colour palette will be larger than ordinary TVs, meaning that programmes and films will offer a more realistic, natural image than what’s possible with current HD and 4K TVs.

For example, when you look at some clouds on an ordinary TV, they tend to look flat and have no integral structure with any defined layers or degrees of brightness, whereas on a HDR TV, the clouds will have noticeable layers and varying degrees of brightness, making the clouds look more realistic.

As well as this, it can also apply to game consoles. At the recent E3 conference, Microsoft announced that the new Xbox One S, a 4K-compatible version of the Xbox One, will also be HDR-compatible. This means that games can be played in HDR quality, making them more realistic than ever.

Is It Any Different To 4K Resolution?

The idea of HDR TV is to make the pixels that are on the screen better by having better contrast ratios and a broader colour range, whereas 4K resolution basically increases the amount of pixels present in the screen. So, while 4K generally requires a larger screen to see the benefits, HDR is applicable to a screen of any size.

However, even though HDR and 4K are different visual concepts, it doesn’t mean that they can’t work well together. In fact, most HDR-compatible TVs are also 4K TVs, simply because that way, the advantages of these technologies can be combined to deliver stunning all-round image quality.
