Great TV Revivals (Part 2)

Cast your mind back to the end of last year, when we started a series that looked at some of the greatest TV revivals. It’s devastating when our favourite TV shows suddenly get cancelled – what are we meant to do with our lives now? Therefore, it’s the best thing ever when TV shows that we thought were dead and buried suddenly make a triumph comeback.

Here are some more of the most successful great TV revivals.

24

After 8 brilliant seasons and a TV movie, 24 finally ended its run back in 2010. Fans were devastated that this would be the last we saw of Jack Bauer, and even more so by the ambiguous ending which saw Jack on the run from the authorities. Fast forward 4 years, and it was announced that the show was coming back for a one off 12 episode special. For the first 11 hours, it adheres to the normal structure of each episode showing one hour out of 24. However, the show skipped forward 12 hours in the final episode. Once again we were left devastated by the series ending and another ambiguous ending for our favourite character. Will it return again? Kiefer says no, but we’re all hoping he changes his mind. Again!

Veronica Mars

Okay, so this one didn’t exactly come back as a TV show. However, it did make a comeback as a brilliant feature length film so we think that it counts. The show was cancelled back in 2007 due to low ratings, despite the critical success of the programme and the number of awards that it won. The series creator wrote a film script after it ended, hoping that he would get to put it to good use at some point. In March 2013, he and lead actress Kristen Bell launched a fundraising Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the film, with a goal of $2 million. Amazingly, this was reached within 10 hours. It went on to make $5.7 million and the film was released last year. Most of the original cast were happy to come back for the filming, and the film turned out to be a real treat for fans of the show.

Arrested Development

When the American sitcom that received critical acclaim was cancelled back in 2006, a lot of people were extremely angry. Despite the praise and awards, it constantly suffered from bad ratings whilst on the channel FOX, so people thought it was pretty much dead and buried after cancellation. Therefore, we were all surprised when Netflix revived the show back in 2013, with another series set to air next year. They released 15 episodes, with most reviews being generally positive. Due to actor’s availability, the show has had to take on a different format – with each episode focusing on someone individually. We think it worked well and the series was brilliant!
