My Cart - There’s nothing quite like the disappointment when your favourite TV show gets cancelled, and a number of great series have received the axe of late. However here we take a quick look at some great cancelled shows that made a rare return to our screens, bigger and better than ever.
The Original Star Trek
There’s no denying that the Star Trek franchise is one of the most successful ever created, however it might surprise you to learn that this iconic series was not always as popular as it is today. After airing for three series between 1966 and 1969 the show was cancelled by the network NBC due to low ratings, in what was undoubtedly one of the worst TV mistakes ever made. However thanks to extensive showings of reruns of the series the show soon became a cult classic and was subsequently revived… and the rest is history.
Dr Who
One of the greatest TV revivals is undoubtedly the cult classic Dr Who. This TV show has now spanned for over 50 years and has delighted generations, becoming the longest-running and most successful science fiction series ever made. The first series of the show was originally aired back in 1963 and ran for over 26 seasons before the BBC pulled the plug in 1989 due to poor ratings and dwindling popularity. It was not until 2005 that the series was finally renewed and since this time the show has grown from strength to strength, becoming more popular than ever, and is now entering its 8th series since its revival.
Family Guy
The hit American animated comedy series Family Guy is no stranger to controversy, and has in fact been cancelled on two separate occasions. The show originally premiered in 1999 to an audience of 22 million viewers and ran for 2 seasons before its cancellation was announced by FOX in the year 2000. However thanks to a last minute reprieve the decision was made to renew the series for an additional third season, before it was cancelled once again in 2002. Yet thanks to good DVD sales, FOX expressed a revived interest in the show and it finally returned for a new season in 2005 following a 3 year hiatus. The show hasn’t looked back since, developing a cult following, winning a number of awards and spawning various spin-off shows.
