In a time when online gaming is so popular, and games like Call of Duty and Halo are bought only for their multiplayer modes, it is easy to forget that one of the best features of most games is the story they tell in their story modes. When game developers do it right, a games story mode can be as exciting and interesting as a film, if not more so. This article will go through 6 of the best story mode stories of gaming history. Don’t worry about spoilers, as we won’t give away anything that may ruin your game play experience. Starting with…
#6 – Heavy Rain
As a game without any multiplayer modes, Heavy Rain was a game focused on story right from the start. The plot features four very different protagonists all involved with the mystery of the Origami Killer. This game is one where there isn’t just one rigid story line and the player’s decisions during the game can change the ending that the player experiences. Usually in games with multiple possible endings, story lines may not have much work done with them as they may not even be present to most gamers playing through the story mode. However, each of Heavy Rain’s storylines was well written and even the endings were interesting and not forced.
#5 – Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption was Rockstar’s 2010 sequel to their hit wild-west game Red Dead Revolver. In the game you play as the former outlaw John Marston who is promised amnesty over his previous crimes if he brings the members of his old gang to justice. The player enjoys completing several quests taking place in both the USA and Mexico as the story develops with several twists and turns until the shocking climax. Forcing a happy ending is one way that stories are often ruined, but Red Dead Redemption lets its story end in a way that doesn’t leave the gamer waiting for more.
#4 – Resident Evil
The Resident Evil series is one of the most successful survival horror franchises, and often credited with popularising the survival horror genre, so it is no surprise that it can boast a brilliant story. Although the story is great in the later Resident Evil games, the earlier parts of the series are where the best stories are. The series starts off with a local police force investigating a series of cannibalistic homicides occurring in a mountain region. The cannibalistic homicides turn out to be caused by an outbreak of a virus that turns people into zombies and other creatures. The series then deals with the aftermath of this outbreak as it spreads to the local city. Most survival horror games, especially ones involving zombies, tend to have forced stories with parts intended to scare the player unnaturally forced in. However the Resident Evil story is very well written and even the scary parts fit in smoothly with the plot.
