The San Diego Comic-Con International, often referred to as just Comic-Con, is a multi-genre entertainment and comic convention held annually in San Diego, California. The four-day event (Thursday-Sunday) held during the summer at the San Diego Convention Center.
Originally Comic-Con showcased just comic books and science fiction and fantasy related film and television. However, the convention now includes a larger range of pop culture and entertainment elements across many genres, including horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games and fantasy novels.
Each year the convention attracts over 130,000 attendees.
Along with panels, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals, Comic-Con hosts a series of previews of upcoming feature films and television series. The evenings include events such as awards ceremonies, the annual Masquerade costume contest, and the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, which showcases short and feature length films.
Researchers, academics and comic book industry professionals present and attend the Comics Arts Conference annually at Comic-Con, presenting scholarly studies on comics and various other works.
Though Comic-Con is often associated with comic books and video games, the convention is popular for television series, and the number of television shows that are promoted far outnumber films. During the 2011 convention, at over 80 different TV shows were represented, compared to about 35 films.
The convention hosts over a thousand panels each year (in 2013, there were 1075 total panels held during the convention), bringing together actors, directors , comics creators, science fiction and fantasy authors, film and television directors, producers, and writers, and creators from all aspects of the popular arts together with their fans for discussion.
Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger and Mike Towry, a group of comic book and pop culture aficionados, founded Comic-Con as the Golden State Comic Book Convention back in 1970.
