How You Can Benefit from HDR in Your TV

hdr concept

When setting out to buy a new TV, there are so many things to consider, such as the practical aspects of screen size and all the technical jargon that you might be unfamiliar with. So, it can seem like a daunting task trying to get the right set for your needs.

If you have heard of HDR but don’t know what it is and want to find out more about it, you have come to the right place. Here’s what you need to know about HDR for your TV and how your viewing experience can benefit.

What is HDR?

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, referring to the technique that heightens a picture’s dynamic range to give a greater contrast between the brightest whites and darkest blacks. In theory, the higher the dynamic range, the closer the TV picture gets to looking like an image closer to that seen by the human eye.

On television, the picture may appear to look flat with indistinguishable layers. HDR aims to solve this problem by balancing out the light and dark areas or the range of colours to give better shadow definition. HDR offers a wide range of colours, ensuring that you see a complete picture, bringing more realism and depth and an added pop to what you’re viewing. It preserves the gradation from dark to light in a way that standard dynamic range cannot.

What Types of HDR are There?

HDR10

HDR10 is the original and most common form of HDR and the standard that has been adopted by a number of manufacturers and streaming services. It must meet the standards of 4:2:0 colour subsampling, 10-bit depth and the BT.2020 colour space. 4K TVs on the market tend to feature HDR10.

Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision HDR was an attempt to take on IMAX cinemas by combining HDR video with Dolby Atmos sound, but it can be adapted for the home. The main difference between Dolby Vision and HDR10 is Dolby allows for dynamic metadata to be added frame by frame, so you always get the image as intended, allowing for a subtler, more improved picture. However, the quality depends on how well it is implemented on each film. You will need a Dolby Vision compatible disc and Blu-ray player, and a TV capable of processing it to enjoy the technology at home.

HDR10+

HDR10+ is Samsung’s own standard of HDR. Like Dolby Vision, it uses dynamic metadata to boost the images frame by frame. Most current Samsung TVs feature HDR10+, and none of Samsung’s TVs will support Dolby Vision, given HDR10+ is a direct rival. HLG

HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) is the HDR format used by TV broadcasters. It is the result of a joint research project by the BBC and Japanese broadcaster NHK and aims to deliver a more convenient HDR solution to the broadcast world. It combines standard dynamic range and high dynamic range into one feed, so HLG-compatible 4K TVs can show HDR images.

How Does HDR Effect TV Viewing?

When watching a TV with HDR, you can experience footage that presents brighter, more vivid images with greater contrast and a more in-depth array of colours that more closely mimic what we see in real life.

With regular, standard definition, anything below a certain level of brightness becomes a shade of black. But the display on an HDR TV goes further, allowing you to clearly see the difference between a really dark picture and something that is just dark. It’s not just about brightness but rather a more natural expression of light and shadow. The subtle yet significant difference in watching HDR adds a new level of dynamism and punchiness that you cannot get from standard definition.
