2014 has been a great year for TV, and has brought us a wealth of fantastic new shows as well as some new series from returning favourites. So with 2015 on the horizon, here we take a quick look back at some of the must see shows from 2014 that are well worth watching.
Fargo
Loosely based on the Cohen brothers film of the same name, Fargo is a delightfully eccentric and atmospheric thriller that features just enough dark humour to offset its rather bleak storyline. The series features delightful performances from Martin Freeman as the put upon insurance man Lester Nygaard, and Billy Bob Thornton as the psychotic and manipulative hit man Lorne Malvo.
This year also saw a wealth of new sitcoms and although most of these fell a little flat, Brooklyn Nine-Nine felt like a welcome breath of fresh air in this rather saturated genre. Whilst the concept of a workplace comedy is nothing new, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is set in a NYC police station, features an excellent cast and truly memorable characters, and is both consistently funny and at times heart warming too.
The gritty detective thriller True Detective captivated viewers from its very first episode and helped kick off 2014 with a bang. Both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson gave impressive performances in their respective roles as the show’s mismatched detectives. With a gripping storyline spanning a 17 year period, the series breathed new life into the detective drama genre, offering up something altogether new and exciting. The show also benefits greatly from its amazing cinematography and includes a breathtaking 6 minute tracking shot. Rumour has it the show will be retuning for a second season later next year, though original cast members McConaughey and Harrelson will not be returning to the cast.
