Another winter complete, another awards season draws to a close.
This year has been like no other – there have been countless awards won, multiple iconic moments made and notable support for greater social issues, such as the momentous #timesup movement.
After all of the festivities have died down, here at Cheap LED TV’s we’ve decided to take a look at some of this year’s biggest winners, and highlight some of the movies that you simply must see this year.
The Shape of Water – 13 Oscar nominations – 4 wins
The Shape of Water is a Guillermo del Toro masterpiece. Set in Baltimore in 1962, the story follows a mute woman (stunningly played by Sally Hawkins) after she falls in love with a creature which has been captured and is being held at the government laboratory she cleans.
The film was nominated in an amazing 13 categories, winning in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Original Score.
Get Out – 4 Oscar nominations – 1 win
A surprise smash-hit at the academy awards this year was Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out, which tells the story of black photographer Chris as he visits his white girlfriends prejudice family for the first time.
The film highlights several problematic social themes, such as slavery and racism, in a stark light and has been met with critical acclaim the world over. Particular praise has revolved around Daniel Kaluuya’s portrayal of Chris, and also Peele’s screenplay, for which it won a well-deserved Oscar.
Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri – 7 Oscar nominations – 2 wins
Frances McDormand shines in this role as a mother seeking justice for her daughter’s murder. After she believes the police are not doing enough to solve the crime, she rents three billboards to draw attention to the crime, and what ensues is an interesting journey between right and wrong.
In keeping with the theme of drawing attention to greater social issues currently being experienced in the world, the film reflects on racism and oppression, with an incredibly strong female lead. One definitely not to be missed.
Darkest Hour – 6 Oscar nominations – 2 wins
Set in wartime May 1940, Darkest Hour focuses on the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill, at a pivotal moment both in his career and simultaneously the history of the UK.
Faced with the threat of German troops attacking, Churchill must decide what way is best for the country to move forward. Gary Oldman won an Oscar for his portrayal of Churchill, and after watching, it is very evident why.
Lady Bird – 5 Oscar nominations
At only 23 years of age Saoirse Ronan has won a Golden Globe Award, been nominated for four BAFTA awards as well as three Oscars – one of which for her role as the titular character in Lady Bird.
Lady Bird follows Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson on her quest for a place at college out of state. The film deals with the trivialities of growing up, not fitting it and stressful family dynamics.
