You might say that transparent displays are one of the most exciting developments of recent years when it comes to TVs. While the technology itself has been around for a while, we have seen the concept come on leaps and bounds in recent years.
While there will always be a place for cheap LED TVs, homeowners who have their heart set on impressing their guests might be persuaded to fork out for glass TV displays. So, let’s have a look at some of the most eye catching glass TV displays out there, and how they differ from one another.
LG 18 inch prototype
One of the glass TV displays which has set tongues wagging is LG’s 18 inch prototype, which was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show this year. Incredibly, it rolls up almost like paper, making for an almost sculpture-like decorative object for a living room when not in use.
Feasibly, owners can carry it around in their pockets to the destination of their choice, or alternatively wrap it around different interior spaces. A 25 inch curved version appears to be on the way, installed to the interior of a car – at this stage, the possibilities seem endless.
Panasonic put their model forward
So, where does the magic happen? All the necessary technology is contained within the wood underneath the glass. Micro LEDs have the job of beaming out the picture over to the glass panel from which viewers can watch it. The glass panel isn’t entirely transparent, but the overall effect is still jaw dropping.
DesignLine
Philips have their own answer – the DesignLine TV, which looks different to the models detailed above, but essentially performs the same function, hiding the LCD display behind a pane of glass that can be described as seamless.
