Tropes in Film and TV: Superheroes

Common and sometimes loved, tropes in film are utilised so often you might not even realise it. Our Princesses trope list showcased amazing characters who enrich film and TV through their plot devices and motivations.

With so many superhero films coming out lately and many more to come, we’ve put together a small list of common superhero tropes you can find in all film genres.

[Warning! Spoilers may lie ahead!]

Superpower Lottery

In superhero films, it’s usual to have several people have a superpower or two, but sometimes there’s the one character who won the superpower lottery. These characters have a devastating power in comparison to the other characters, and are typically only brought down due to a Deus Ex Machina moment or a favourable plot twist.

In the X-Men series, En Sabah Nur, hailed the first mutant, managed to transport his consciousness into other mutants’ bodies and steal their powers along the way. The result? An impressive collection of powers that made him very dangerous and difficult to beat.

The Good Captain

The rank of Captain is fairly common in comics, perhaps linked to a lower ranking individual in the Army and its indication to being more approachable but still high enough to earn and deserve some respect. The prevalent prejudice of utilising force instead of another way of solving issues is thought to be the reason behind the several Captain titles throughout the stories.

Captain Jack Harkness, before meeting the Doctor, was morally reproachable. By the time Torchwood came around, his character development turned him into a Good Captain.

All You Need is Heart

In this trope, powers aren’t particularly needed. Actually, most heroes falling into this category have no powers at all! All that matters is what’s in their heart, and they are typically successful in their mission by staying true to their beliefs.

Bilbo Baggins is a great example of a hero who only has his heart, and it’s all he needs. His niceness and charm persuades his company that kindness, no matter how small, can help fight the forces of darkness in the world.
