Blockbusters are the essence of Hollywood and, whenever the months from May to August come around, we know we’re in for some amazing films. This year’s upcoming summer blockbusters seem to be preparing us for a few more box office hits, as we anxiously anticipate them.
Independence Day: Resurgence (23rd June)
Two decades after the first Independence Day film, both in-film and in real life, is a much expected summer sci-fi blockbuster. In the film, the United Nations has created the Earth Space Defence (ESD), a global defence program that works as Earth’s early warning system and main defence.
However, before the aliens were defeated 20 years ago, they managed to send a distress signal. This signal has reached deep space, and reinforcements have come with a powerful gravitational machine that threatens the world.
Ghostbusters (11th July)
The all-female reboot of the iconic Ghostbusters films comes to us 30 years after the original films. Paul Feig’s reboot of this classic 80s franchise sees Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy playing a pair of overlooked authors of a book claiming ghosts are real.
When the book resurfaces, Kristen Wiig’s character is ridiculed in academia. She later on gets her revenge as ghosts attack Manhattan and she saves the world alongside Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.
Star Trek Beyond (22nd July)
The third film in the series’ reboot finds the USS Enterprise’s crew halfway into the iconic five-year mission when they are attacked by unknown aliens. This attack forces the crew into abandoning the ship only to be stranded on an unknown planet with no prospects of being rescued.
The return of the main cast sees Idris Elba joining them as Krall, a reptilian-looking villain who will test everything the Federation stands for. The film is rumoured to ignore most of Star Trek Into Darkness, and knowing the controversy around Khan’s reveal, it might turn out to be a good choice.
Suicide Squad (5th August)
DC Comics’ antihero team is the third instalment in the DC Extended Universe. ARGUS, a secret government agency led by Amanda Waller, recruits several imprisoned supervillains to form ‘Task Force X’ in exchange for clemency. Their mission is to save the world from an unknown but dangerously powerful threat.
The film lines up the characters Deadshot, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn, Enchantress, El Diablo, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, Katana, Slipknot, and, of course, the Joker. The anticipation for this film is very high, and if the trailer is a clue to what is to come, it looks like it will be a hit!
