As such, we continually have our finger on the pulse of the entertainment industry, whether that’s across the pond or on British screens.

Well, a recent news story a little closer to home found that there are still over 9,000 houses in the UK that while away their days watching TV… on their black and white sets! So, in celebration of this fact, we wanted to celebrate the beauty of contemporary black and white cinema and list some of our personal favourite modern movies that make use of the black and white medium; and if any of you 9,000+ black and whiters are reading… this one’s for you!

Control (2007)

Control documents Joy Division’s rise to infamy in the late 1970s. It follows lead singer, Ian Curtis, and his fluctuating mental health, and uses the monochromatic nature of the medium to express his inner turmoil, while simultaneously reflecting the band’s post-punk sound. An absolute must for any fans of Joy Division.

Ed Wood (1994)

Following on from his initial black and white stop-motion cinematic beginnings, Tim Burton returned to the black and white medium with the wonderful, and quirky, Ed Wood. Johnny Depp stars as Edward D. Wood Jr., the filmmaker responsible for cult-classics, Glen or Glenda and Plan 9 From Outer Space. Starring Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi, witness as Ed Wood attempts to reinstate his career in one of his famed low-budget creations.

Pleasantville (1998)

Pleasantville stars a remarkably young Tobey Maguire and Reece Witherspoon, who magically find themselves part of a 1950s US sitcom titled – you guessed it – Pleasantville. Their presence serves to splash a little colour on the show-cast’s black and white existence, in an almost Back to the Future-esq time-travelling caper. It’s a light-hearted and entertaining movie, and is guaranteed to brighten up your day!

There are of course numerous other classics, such as Schindler’s List or Sin City, but we’d be here all night!  So if you are yet to catch any of the above, then treat yourself! Turn the lights down low, grab the popcorn, and join those 9,000+ black and white TV owners and celebrate the black and white cinematic medium!

Now, you don’t only need a black and white TV to enjoy these films… in fact, they’ll look even better on one of our flash new sets!
