Gone are the days when you would circle the next instalment of your favourite show in the TV guide to make sure you didn’t miss it! The streaming service has 69 million subscribers and claims that every month, 10 billion hours are spent watching films and TV shows through the service. Netflix have recently announced that in 2016 they will be making great improvements to their service in order to deliver better quality to their customers.
What’s the Problem?
Currently, Netflix already have algorithms which ensure that you can continue to watch your favourite show even if you have a low bandwidth. They do this by dropping the resolution of the content based on your bandwidth – they can even do this while you’re watching.
The problem is, not all films or shows are the same. Simply put, a graphic marvel, like Avatar isn’t the same as a kids show, like Adventure Time. A simple animated film doesn’t need a high bit rate for you to enjoy it. In cases like these, the Netflix algorithms don’t really work as well.
What’s the Solution?
Netflix will begin the process of going through each and every show and film in their library and creating an individual formula for each one. This will mean cutting the bit rate for some content that simply doesn’t need it!
The really good news is that this will reduce the overall bandwidth by 20% – something that mobile users will be particularly excited to hear! This is also good news for Netflix themselves as it will ease some of the strain on their servers, which should mean a better quality of service for their customers.
