The month of October brings with it something very exciting, an early Christmas present if you will – Freeview Play. Now, you’re probably familiar with the first half of that name, being that Freeview is in nearly every home across the country, but they’ve added the word ‘Play’…wha? Is it a trick? What does this mean?
Basically, it means that it’s the next generation of Freeview, being brought to us as an integrated part in a variety of new kit. The Freeview experience you’re familiar with brings you such services as BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, including their secondary channels, for free.
What Freeview Play brings you is catch-up capabilities, so you can, as Huey Lewis famously said, go back in time! Only to watch your favourite shows however, not to do anything particularly useful like stop a war.
With its connected, on-demand video technology, it operates similar to the ways of Sky, Virgin Media and Youview, but it’s all free! They want to emphasise an ease-of-use vibe with this box, with one unified interface which covers all of the channels.
One of the nice little additions with this box is that the manufacturer has the opportunity to tweak the look of Freeview Play on their televisions, as well as add any extra services on top of the ones already added by Freeview Play.
Basically, Freeview Play is all the normal catch-up services wrapped in one magnificent bow. Other, smaller channels are also included in the service however, so in total you actually get access to about 60 channels, as well as an added bonus of 12 HD channels.
As we said, manufacturers will have the opportunity to add their own features, so you can expect streaming services like Netflix and Youtube to be included with some too.
You might be thinking that this doesn’t sound like anything special and are probably wondering why you should get Freeview Play.
While this Freeview Play isn’t anything revolutionary – the service it offers are, after all, available online – what it does is bring Freeview into the modern world, as well as the standard television experience– it’s especially well worth having if you’re shopping around for a new bit of kit!
It also opens up a cheaper option for those who can’t afford to get recording services, as the ability you have with catch-up means you don’t need to record anything as you can catch up at any time!
So basically, we like the idea of Freeview Play. Of course, it isn’t out yet, but will be at the end of this month so keep your eyes peeled! We know we will.
