When you’re watching a film, there’s nothing better than experiencing it in all its full and ultimate glory; where the screen’s just perfect, the speaker’s are giving the right amount of bass, even surround sound. However, if like us, you may be wondering, just how do old films get the modern day remastering treatment to bring them in line with the contemporary releases?
Scanning In
Well, when remastering a movie for DVD or Blu-ray restoration, the films must be scanned in frame by frame at a resolution of at least 2K – or 2,048 pixels. With regards to scanning higher – at say 4K, which has a resolution of 4096×3092 – you are looking at around 12 Terabytes of data being generated, before editing has even started!
So once scanned in, specialist scratch and dust removal software, such as MTI’s Digital Restoration System, helps to restore the film to its original colour and former glory. Then, to remove noise and boost dialogue, Pro Tools are incorporated. At this stage, extra sounds and soundtracks elements can be boosted and spread across surround sound speakers in order to create a fuller and more immersive experience.
The Wizard of Oz
One of the more famous examples of film restoration is with the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz, which was initially shot using a three-strip Technicolor process. This involved incorporating three different black and white negatives which were, in turn, manufactured from red, green and blue light filters to be combined to form the separate cyan, magenta and yellow film of the 1939 motion picture.
Now, to digitally remaster these it involved scanning each of the three Technicolor strips in separately to be individually, and digitally, tinted. However, whilst this sounds relatively easy, you have to consider that these films have suffered from the aging process that can befall any piece of analogue technology, having shrank and suffered particularly badly from dust and scratch interference.
As a result, the work that they undertook is made that little bit more impressive when you see the modern remastering in all its contemporary glory. For those who’ve seen the DVD extras, you’ll be able to attest to the fact that such digital remastering even brought out the burlap in the cheeks of the scarecrow, which previously had not been able to be seen in the original. Pretty stunning, ey?
