Meet HDR: The Future of Television Features

Over the past few years, a large number of different technological features have been added onto our televisions, with the promise that they will change our viewing experience forever. Some have kept this promise close to their heart, delivering something truly revolutionary; others have not, leaving you an empty feeling of disappointment, like when your mum said she’d take you to the park and drives straight past.

Here at Cheap LED TV, we keep our promise of providing some of the best cheap LED televisions on the market, so it gives us great pleasure to introduce you to the newest feature to hit televisions, which keeps its promise of a new experience: HDR.

HDR, short for high-dynamic range, has slowly been making its way into top-end televisions from companies such as Vizio, Samsung and LG and continues to grow in popularity.

But what is HDR?

To put it simply, HDR works to greatly improve the colours shown on your TV screen. Most televisions are fitted with something called standard dynamic range, which has a lower light intensity range that ultimately removes some of the colours from your screen to ensure your viewing experience isn’t compromised. HDR basically wants to rectify this issue, giving you the best quality picture while re-enforcing your viewing experience.

What this means for consumers, however, is that if they want to go television shopping, they’re going to have to do their homework beforehand. When looking for a new TV, you’re going to need to know why contrast ratio, or the difference between black and white levels, matters. You’re also going to need to gauge the value of a 4K television, which can price tremendously higher than a regular 1080p HDTV. You’ll also need to wade through the different television technology, determining whether LCD, plasma, LED, or, not forgetting the newcomer, OLED is best.

Ultimately HDR appeals to anyone who’s wishing for a much better picture quality, however as it stands, it’s only being implemented into the higher end models of television that will set you back quite a bit. The feature, at this point, is still a luxury item, and like other 4k sets requires compatible content in order to create the improved picture experience. There are only a handful of content providers right now, like Amazon’s Instant Video, who support HDR but that is said to change in time, through a ‘phased approach’.

The unfortunate thing about all this technology, is that while it’s exciting, the prices are just enormous and we know that most people won’t be able to afford them! Of course, if you’re looking for something a bit cheaper, we have a whole range of different cheap TVs.
