This old chestnut! As a company which offer a range of televisual products, such as our fantastically cheap LED smart TV, such a debate is right up our street. Much like the 1080p vs 4K debate, there can only be one winner, but who will / has come out on top?
Firstly, let’s establish the difference. Both formats boast the use of blue lasers as opposed to red which packs more than 500mW compared to the red’s 200mW. This essentially means that it is operating pretty darn powerfully. However, one significant difference comes in the form of the amount of data that the format can hold.
Storage Space
The storage space on a Blu-ray dual-layer disc is 50GB as opposed to HD’s 30GB. This means that it can hold a lot more information when it comes to creating a visual spectacular which, with the increase in huge mega-blockbusters and companies shelling out millions of dollars on their projects to make them look the bee’s knees, Blu-ray is the go to choice to look the bee’s kneesiest.
Cost
As a general rule, HD-DVDs tend to be cheaper than Blu-ray due to their ability to be produced on pre-existing equipment, where as Blu-ray discs cannot. However, since the dawn of their creation, companies have been working on improving the Blu-ray production techniques meaning that they can be produced for less, thus passing the cost-benefits onto the customer.
Choice
Whilst the two formats have been battling it out for years, many of the industry’s larger firms are committing their films only to Blu-ray. Warner Bros, Disney, MGM, Sony Pictures and Fox have all said goodbye to HD-DVD and state they will only be using the Blu-ray format from now on, meaning that Blu-ray’s share of the high-definition DVD market looks set to grow exponentially.
We Have A Winner!
So there we have it, Blu-ray is the victor. Through its installation in the PlayStation 4 and its greater disc capacity, the Blu-ray format looks set to be the dominant format in the future high-definition DVD market. With the numerous benefits to this format, this looks set to be great for the consumer, although if history is anything to go by, a little competition is always a good thing.
