Worst TV Plot Twists

Last week saw the dramatic and much-anticipated unveiling of the killer of Lucy Beale, on long-running soap EastEnders. Over 11 million viewers tuned in to witness the big reveal, however the killer’s identify left many viewers feeling distinctly underwhelmed. Many fans of the show flocked to Twitter to express their disappointment at this rather unexpected plot twist. Inspired by this, here we take a look at some of the worst plot twists in TV history.

Dallas

Plot twists don’t come much more ridiculous than the return of Bobby Ewing in the American TV series Dallas. At the end of the shows 8th season, Bobby Ewing, was killed off in a car crash. However, this story arc proved unpopular with fans and the show subsequently experienced a drop in ratings. As a solution to their predicament, the producers of the show decided there was only one thing for it: bring Bobby back. In a now infamous scene, the “dead” Bobby re-materialised in the shower and the entire of the 1985-1986 season was written off as a dream had by his wife, Pam Ewing. This big reveal has since become an iconic moment in TV history and is easily one of the most ridiculed plot twists of all time.

St Elsewhere

St Elsewhere was a fairly typical American medical drama, which ran from 1982 to 1988, and followed the trials and tribulations of the medical staff at a Boston Hospital. However, the show is now famous for the controversial plot twist that occurred in the series’ last ever episode. This plot twist hinted that the entire show had been the product of the imagination of the autistic Tommy Westphalls, who in the episode’s closing scene, is seen staring at a model of the hospital set inside a snow globe. Whilst many felt that this was one of the most inspirational endings in TV history, rather unsurprisingly, it left many fans feeling cheated.

Lost

The TV show Lost was famous for its many mind-bending plot twists and nearly every episode featured a shocking twist or revelation, designed to keep viewers on their toes. However, when the truth about the plane crash survivors was finally revealed, it left many fans feeling rather disappointed.

It turns out they were all dead the entire time and living in purgatory. This frankly absurd plot twist left many questions unanswered, not least what on earth the polar bears were all about, and left many viewers feeling a little well…lost.
