Ah, this year looks be to an absolute corker, right? Jurassic Park and Star Wars are somewhere near the top of our list. But probably more exciting than those – if you can imagine such a thing – is the release of the 24th Bond in the long-running series. Yep, Daniel Craig dons that tux again, Sam Mendes wheels himself behind the camera, and Christoph Waltz will play a mysterious villain in Spectre.
But just think, for a second, how different it could all have been. Because it’s not just Connery, Lazenby, Connery (again), Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Craig who’ve ordered those infamous vodka Martini’s. Let’s take a cheeky gander at the men who turned down the chance to work for Her Majesty’s Secret Service; the men who would be Bond…
Cary Grant
Cary Grant was a true gent. He looked ace when suited and booted, and he had that super-star quality few can match. Couple that with his tongue-cheek-style, which means he could’ve delivered an awesome one-liner, and we have the makings of a Bond. But at 58, Grant reckoned he was too old to play the super-spy – try telling that to Roger Moore, who was also 58 when he starred in A View to a Kill.
David Niven
Ah, was there ever a more gentlemanly gentleman than the iconic David Niven? He was also, like 007, a military man. Effortlessly charming and devilishly good-looking, Niven was, for that reason, creator Ian Fleming’s original choice for Bond. But Niven declined, although he did go on to play the not-at-all secret agent in the 1967 spoof Casino Royale. Which really isn’t a laughing matter.
Adam West
It’s… hard… to… believe… but the not-quite-but-almost original Batman was genuinely considered for the role back when Connery quit. Safari suits we can take, but lycra?! Sure, Adam West is a pretty cool guy, and he’s got those bland, matinee idol good looks, so he’s got that going. But there’s one glaring issue – and even West thought it himself – he’s not British. And Bond, to West’s mind, needs to be British.
Ewan McGregor
Everyone loves Ewan McGregor, right? And everyone loves James Bond, yep? But… that doesn’t mean Ewan McGregor loves Bond (No word on how MI6’s finest feels about the Scottish actor). When Pierce Brosnan was canned from the Secret Service, McGregor’s name kept cropping up, along with Clive Owen’s. McGregor, though, reckoned that playing Bond would wreck his career.
Of course, we’re still left with five fantastic actors who did say yes to playing Bond. And what better way to watch them than on an awesome television.
