Some people love them, others hate them, but the tearjerker movie is big business. It seems that people love to pay to sit in a dark room and sob for 2 hours. So, to celebrate this slightly masochistic genre, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most blubber-worthy movies of all time. Seriously, if these don’t bring at least one tear to your eye, your heart is made of stone.
Marley and Me
This one took us all by surprise. Expecting a happy movie featuring Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston and a dog, we were not ready for the emotional distress that came towards the end of the film.
Beaches
The loss of your best friend isn’t exactly something you want to think about, but Beaches manages to plonk it straight in front of you, reducing every viewer to a pool of tears, reaching for the phone to let their bestie know how much they love them.
Up
Just thinking about the opening of this film gets us all welling up. Not exactly what you would expect from an animated kids film, but the life of Carl and Ellie is sadder than the time that hunter killed Bambi’s mother.
The Green Mile
A wrongly accused gentle giant with strange powers is on death row for a murder he did not commit. Cue one of the most heart-wrenching stories of all time.
Titanic
Sure, this may be a pretty obvious one, but how can you hold back the tears when the ship starts to go down and the old couple tuck themselves into bed as the water starts to pour in through the door. Excuse me while I go sob for a few hours.
The Notebook
This film could transform the most cold-hearted, soulless being into a blubbering wreck. Every part of this film reduces us to tears, from the whirlwind romance of the young Noah and Allie (“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird!”) to the old Noah retelling the love story to the confused old lady.
