Surprising Movie Adaptations

These days it can often be difficult to think of a movie that isn’t a remake of a popular classic or based on a book. However, here we’ll take a quick look at some classic films that actually started out as novels. They might just surprise you.

Mrs Doubtfire

This much loved heart-warming film, starring the late Robin Williams in one of his most memorable roles as the cross-dressing super-nanny Mrs. Doubtfire, was actually based on a novel of the same name by Scottish author Anne Fine. At the time of writing the author undoubtedly had no idea her novel would one day become a box office hit.

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is another movie classic that actually started life on a book shelf. Indeed, the film was based on a novel of the same name by writer Winston Groom. Interestingly, following the success of the movie, Winston choose to write a sequel to his first novel, which opens with Forrest telling readers “Don’t never let nobody make a movie of your life’s story.”

Shrek

Another rather surprising entry in this list is DreamWorks animated classic Shrek. It was finally released over a decade after the publication of its original source material: a children’s picture book written and illustrated by William Steig.

Blade Runner

The eerie sci-fi film noir Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford, was loosely based on the novel  Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by acclaimed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick. Interestingly however, the film’s director Ridley Scott reportedly never actually read the novel.

Jurassic Park

Another lesser known piece of movie trivia – the cult classic adventure movie Jurassic Park was in fact based on a novel of the same name by science fiction writer Michael Crichton. Jurassic Park’s director Steven Spielberg, who had worked with the author previously on the television series ER, was so excited by Michael Crichton’s plans for the novel, that he persuaded Universal to buy the film rights to the book before it was even published!
