The Entertainment World Pays Tribute to Robin Williams

As you will no doubt have heard by now, the entertainment world has lost one of its great talents; actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead at his home in California, aged 63. His publicist stated that he had been battling severe depression, and the police have said that they are treating it as an apparent suicide.

Tributes have, naturally, poured in from across the globe as the sad news spread. US President Barack Obama said, “”Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind.

“He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most.”

Many of those who have worked with him in his long career – he rose to fame with Mork and Mindy back in 1978 – have also paid tribute.

Director Steven Spielberg, who directed Williams in 1991’s Hook, said, “Robin was a lightning storm of comic genius and our laughter was the thunder that sustained him. He was a pal and I can’t believe he’s gone.”

Fellow comedian Steve Martin said on Twitter, “I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences paid a simple tribute, referencing one of William’s famous voice roles.

Chris Columbus, director of Mrs Doubtfire, said, “We have lost one of our most inspired and gifted comic minds, as well as one of this generation’s greatest actors. To watch Robin work was a magical and special privilege… He truly was one of the few people who deserved the title of ‘genius’.”Although talks had been in progress regarding a sequel to the 1993 hit – and Williams was attached to reprise his role – it seems unlikely to proceed now.

Others made reference to the tragic reality of Williams’ struggles with addiction and depression. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel tweeted, “Robin was as sweet a man as he was funny. If you’re sad, please tell someone.” Stellan Skarsgard, who co-starred with Williams in Good Will Hunting, told the TT news agency, “People take their own lives for many different reasons, and it’s not unusual among comedians that the comedy is a way of keeping the darkness at bay, that may have been the case with him.”

Perhaps one of the most touching tributes, however, came from Williams’ own daughter, Zelda. His last post on social media was a tribute to her on her 25th birthday, and following the tragic news she posted a quote from French poet and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:

Here at Cheap LED TV, we would like to add our voice to these tributes; from eccentric alien in Mork and Mindy to the irrepressible penguins of Happy Feet, from hyperactive radio DJ in Good Morning Vietnam to therapist in Good Will Hunting, his many roles have touched many hearts, and he will undoubtedly be deeply missed.
