Many would argue that American television shows have taken over and firmly established themselves in the consciousness of the UK’s public. It’s difficult to argue against this point when you consider the hype surrounding the new series of Game of Thrones, and also the critical acclaim that shows such as House of Cards and True Detective have received. However, Britain is still producing quality drama with intricate plotting that is complemented by fascinating character development. In this blog we will look into some of the highlights of British television.
The Widower
The Widower stars Reece Shearsmith who achieved fame for co-creating and staring in The League of Gentlemen many years ago. The grim humour may not be as blatant as The League of Gentlemen, but this chilling 3 part drama will stay with you for days to come. It is based on the true story of Malcolm Webster, a real-life murderer found guilty of murdering his first wife in 2011, and then of attempting to murder his second. Although taken from real life, The Widower conforms to all the suspenseful conventions of genre, and is well worth a watch.
Whitechapel
Whitechapel stars Rupert Penry Jones, Phillip Davis and Steve Pemberton (who also co-starred and co-created The League of Gentlemen). This series is about detectives in London’s Whitechapel district, a place where murders are being committed that replicate historical crimes. The series never gets overwhelmed with details like many detective dramas can do, and this could be down the excellent performance of Steve Pemberton, who steals the show playing an eccentric archivist.
Inside No.9
Keeping in the League of Gentlemen theme, Inside No.9 sees the collaboration of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith in 6 very different tales. True to form, these stories have the characteristics of the ordinary and mundane, and rub shoulders with the extraordinary and macabre. If you were a fan of TV series such as Tales from the Unexpected and The Twilight Zone, then these unpredictable tales of high comedy and claustrophobic horror won’t disappoint.
