Whether you’re buying a new TV for the summer of sports, to get the most out of your favourite TV shows or to turn your living room into a home cinema, finding the right one can be tricky. There are so many different types of TV, as well as a huge range of sizes, that making the choice can seem pretty daunting. These tips and tricks can help you to get it right.
Size Matters
When it comes to picking the right TV for your room, size certainly does matter – too small and you won’t be able to enjoy the details to their fullest; too large and your room will be overpowered, and you won’t be able to get a comfortable viewing angle. Time for some maths – home cinema experts say that if you multiply the distance (in inches) from which you’ll view your TV by 0.625 you’ll get the perfect size. That means that if your sofa is 5ft (60 inches) from where you want to place your TV, you should be looking at a TV of around 37 inches in size.
Of course, this does depend on your preferences – some might like their TV a bit bigger or smaller than this – but there’s a simple way to check, especially if you plan to mount your TV on the wall. Just use some decorator’s tape to mark out the size you’re considering, and you’ll get a good idea of how it will relate to the rest of your room.
LED, LCD, Plasma, Smart…
Different types of TV offer different advantages. For example, if you want to be able to make the most of catch-up and streaming TV, browse internet content and more, then you’ll want to look at our range of cheap smart TVs. These connect directly to your home WiFi, making it easy to access the content you want.
Whether you go for LCD, LED or a Plasma screen will, to some extent, depend on your viewing habits. If you tend to watch during the day, when your room is brightly lit, you may find an LCD TV looks good to you, and they tend to be more affordable. Home cinema enthusiasts tend to praise Plasma screens very highly, as they give you deeper shadows and the colours look more natural – but they aren’t particularly energy efficient, and are becoming less common as manufacturers scale down production. LED TVs offer good contrast and colour ranges, and are very versatile, so they’re ideal for most homes.
