Reality TV is known for pushing the boundaries, and a new reality series from Channel 5 promises to test these limits even further. The new series, titled 10,000 BC, which launched at the beginning of this month, has been billed as a ground breaking social experiment, designed to test the survival abilities of modern-day humans, in a prehistoric world.
The series will follow twenty 21stcentury Brits, left to fend for themselves in the remote Bulgarian countryside, as they experience what life was like for our Stone Age ancestors.
Participants in the series, which was filmed back in the summer, spent two months fending for themselves in an isolated, forested wilderness, hunting and foraging for food, equipped with nothing more than Stone Age tools.
Whilst the show is certainly based on a rather interesting premise, already there have been complaints from the Twittersphere. Some believe that things have been made too easy for the contestants; and that the experience is not quite as prehistoric as its title would lead us to believe.
For example, upon arrival at their new home, the volunteers were handily provided with animal skin outfits, walking boots, socks, a supply of clean drinking water and even ready-made shelters.
However, given that it’s rather obvious that a number of the volunteers were chosen for their apparent unsuitability to Stone Age life, this is probably a good thing.
The participants were also supervised 24 hours a day by a medical team, who were on standby in case things went awry. Whilst this was obviously required in order to ensure the health and safety of the participants, it does compromise a little on the authenticity of the experiment.
Human relationships are often the most fascinating part of any reality show and whilst everyone is being nice for now, if we’ve learned anything from the genre, it’s that this won’t last for long. Hence, it’ll be interesting to see how the group dynamics change in coming episodes as the contestants face increasing difficulties. And it shouldn’t be too long before the skin and furs start to fly.
Overall, whilst the series may leave some viewers wishing they lived in a time before television, there’s no denying that the series has the potential to make for some rather compelling viewing and its worth keeping an eye out for.
